We wasted a lot of both on hope.
Hope just disguises exercises in futility, the wisest laymen turn away at the break of every day, and they'd say,

We like to ride the wave of shady ways and means. We'll try to earn your trust, but it's just too much to expect. But every now and again you get surprised, though there's not much hope for those who don't mind our kind. They're the bravest you can find.
